What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is described as “intense and prolonged feelings of fear and distress that occur out of proportion to the actual threat or danger” and “the feelings of fear and distress interfere with normal daily functioning”.1 It is an excessive fear or worry about situations, events, or activities. It is normal to feel some anxiety or nervousness during certain situations, that nervousness becomes excessive. It escalates to the point that a person is unable to function in a given situation. People with anxiety may develop rituals that they must perform in order to reduce the anxiety they’re feeling.
