Effects of Sleep Deprivation on the Human Body

What is Sleep?

Sleep is an intricate state in physiology, and we, humans, spend about a third of our lifetime sleeping. Sleep has two distinctive states, the rapid eye movement (REM) and non-rapid eye movement (NREM). The brain requires an adequate amount of sleep for nourishment to function effectively.

The National Institutes of Health advocates that on a daily basis:

  • Adults require 7-8 hours of sleep

  • Teenagers and school-aged children require 9 hours of sleep

  • Toddlers and pre-school children require a minimum of 10-12 hours of sleep

In the time of sleep, there are countless important changes that the body undergoes that affect biological and physiological functions including immune defense functions, restoration of memory and cognition.

Sleep deprivation happens when the body has lacked sleep for extended hours due to various reasons and affects people of all ages. It has gained the attention of researchers and public health because of the rising numbers and the myriad of chronic diseases.
