A Brief Intro to Asthma

It is estimated that more than three million Canadians have the chronic lung condition known as asthma. It's a well known disease of the lungs that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterized by symptoms of coughing, wheezing, tightness in the chest, and difficulty breathing.

Individuals with asthma have more sensitive airways that are triggered by elements in the environment. These triggers would not normally have an effect on people with healthy lungs.

Asthma is one of those diseases that is usually diagnosed in the childhood years. Some of these cases begin as early as during the first year of life. One positive aspect of asthma is that over half of childhood onset asthma cases are resolved by young adulthood.

Avoiding exposure to triggers as much as possible is one of the best asthma prevention methods. Asthma affects millions of people worldwide, but mortality rates can be very low if proper management steps are taken.
